Everything you need to know about Warm Paraffin Wax....

Manal Oulad Senior Podiatrist

Warm paraffin wax has been used as standard foot care treatment in podiatry for many years, it was introduced in the Roman Empire for its therapeutic and cosmetic benefits.

The paraffin used is a colourless, soft, solid wax made from saturated hydrocarbons and has multiple benefits. It is a natural emollient which softens the skin and helps with pain relief.

How does it work?

Paraffin wax heat therapy increases blood flow to the skin, providing a therapeutic and healing effect. It relaxes the muscles and relieves sore and achy joints which makes it particularly beneficial for those suffering from arthritis and rheumatic pain.

The wax increases sweat and sebum production in the skin, allowing beneficial nutrients to be drawn into the skins cells rejuvenating the skin. Another great benefit is that it helps with hydration keeping the skin moisturised and soft.

Here are some conditions that can benefit from the therapeutic effect of the warm wax therapy

  • Sore muscles
  • Arthritis
  • Joint mobility issues
  • Eczema & Psoriasis
  • Circulatory problems
  • Chilblains (only to be used when the skin is not broken)
  • Scar tissue
  • Inflammation
  • Muscle spasm
  • Tendonitis
  • Sports injuries (e.g. sprains)
  • Scleroderma
  • Heel & arch pain
  • Plantar fasciitis

Side effects and contraindications

The paraffin wax is tested in the lab to make sure it is safe and hygienic to use on the body, making it hypoallergenic. It is completely natural, and has a low melting point which makes it safe so it can be easily applied to the skin at a low temperature without causing a burn.

You should not have warm wax therapy treatment if:

  • You have very sensitive skin, so as to avoid developing a rash
  • You have poor blood circulation
  • You have rashes or open wounds
  • You have diabetes with peripheral neuropathy (loss of sensation)
